PHS COE: “‘Speaking up’ Across Power Differentials: A Strategy to Improve Our Learning and Our Patients’ Safety”

November 4, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Hosted by: PHS Center of Expertise in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety

Speaker: May Pian-Smith, MD

Director, Quality and Safety, Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management, MGH

Intended Audience: Medical Educators, Clinical-Fellows, -Residents, and -Students

Note: Resident and fellow participation in COE sessions is tracked and reported to Program Directors after each academic year so that they are aware of resident interest as well as additional initiative and commitment, and can reflect this as appropriate in mentoring and reference letters. It is important to sign in at the event so your attendance can be included.

COE sessions cover the topic (as noted) with opportunity for Q&A and for informal conversation about career development including examples and advice based on the speaker’s own experience.

Root cause analyses have shown that communication lapses contribute to a majority of adverse events, and that often someone knew there was a concern but did not speak-up about it. Similarly, a reluctance to appropriately question/challenge our teachers limits how we learn during clinical interactions.  This highly-interactive session will highlight a few studies looking at this problem at Partners and HMS, and the results of simulation-based training aimed at addressing this challenge. We will identify “hurdles” and “enablers” to speaking up and develop effective strategies for ensuring better communication.

Dinner will be provided.
