Canary: Information Extraction from Narrative Electronic Data for Researchers and Clinicians
Information extraction is a key Natural Language Processing (NLP) task for discovering and mining critical knowledge buried in unstructured clinical data. Nevertheless, widespread adoption of NLP has yet to materialize; the technical skills required for the development or use of such software can present a major barrier for medical researchers. In particular, no free NLP software geared towards biomedical researchers with limited computer science background has been made available. To address this issue we have developed Canary, a free and open source solution designed for users without NLP, software development or engineering experience. The software allows users to model their target information using lexicons and detection criteria, ranging from simple to complex. It was designed to be fast and work out of the box via a user-friendly graphical interface.
*Please note: The BWH Digital Research Forum is a private peer meeting for BWH researchers, clinicians and innovators working on digital projects and data science to connect and share ideas. The Digital Research Forum is held the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 8-9 am in the 3rd floor conference center of the BTM at 60 Fenwood Rd.
