Developing Your Elevator Pitch and Networking Tips for Postdocs
February 15, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Developing an elevator pitch is one of the most important things you can do in order to promote your work, yet many people struggle with what should be included, how to tailor this for different audiences, and how to communicate this properly. In this workshop, Propel will provide examples for how to build and communicate your elevator pitch, so that the next time someone asks you, “what do you do?”, you will have a simple but effective response.
Additionally, since most people find networking intimidating and often avoid this valuable activity, Propel will provide tips to take the stress out of this process. Advice on how to easily and effectively build relationships to make the most of your connections will be shared. The workshop will allow time to practice starting and maintaining conversations. This seminar will also cover various ways to follow up so the relationships you build can be cultivated for years to come.
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Develop a 15-30 second elevator pitch with different levels of detail tailored to specific audiences
2. Write several statements which can be used to start a conversation during a networking event
3. Identify about options to use to enhance and maintain relationship development
This workshop is the first in a series of workshops designed to assist postdocs in obtaining the skills necessary to transition to positions in industry. Attendance at these workshops will allow participants to have access to the BWH Postdoc Association’s Connectors Program, a resource for connecting with postdoc alumni who are working in the private sector.
