HMS Advanced Teaching Skills
June 2, 2017 @ 8:00 am - June 3, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
This innovative course is aimed at medical teachers who wish to learn new techniques to improve learners’ engagement and retention. The first day of the course will provide in depth exposure to the Case Method using the Question, Listen, and Respond Method of teaching. The method will be showcased in the morning by teachers from Harvard Business School and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. In the afternoon, participants will join a case-based tutorial session to practice an interactive way of teaching medicine through the Question, Listen, and Respond Methodology. They will also learn how to construct a memorable lecture. The second day will emphasize mastering innovative and interactive skills for successful medical teaching. Participants will learn from award winning and internationally recognized expert teachers. The topics include Speaking to the Media, Resident’s Report, Simulations showing Interdisciplinary Complex Clinical Decision-Making, the use of Art to Aid in Physical Diagnosis, Volunteer Patients Giving Immediate Feedback on Communication Skills and Team-based Learning Principles applied to Attending Rounds. Each type of teaching exercise will be demonstrated and/or practiced in real-time to give participants the experience of using these engaging techniques. Dr. Helen Shields will summarize the top teaching points and provide a Take-Away handout on Saturday afternoon.
